What are probiotics and prebiotics?

Probiotics are bacteria present in a person’s digestive tract, and they help support the body’s immunity and ability to absorb nutrients. Consuming probiotics and prebiotics can help keep a healthy and balanced digestive system and gut.

Probiotics occur naturally in cultured and fermented foods. Examples of food with naturally occurring probiotics: yogurt, kefir, miso, raw dairy, sourdough bread and starter, sauerkraut, kimchi and all other fermented veggies, kombucha and many cheeses.

Prebiotics are a type of non-digestible fiber compound. Prebiotics help feed probiotics. Prebiotics include raw chicory root, raw garlic, raw or cooked onions, raw asparagus, raw dandelion greens, raw leeks, raw jicama and underripe bananas.
